Is it a NZ birth? Use full stop for surname with first name and year. Scroll through names looking for a mangled version of surname.

Nope, the Feilding ones had to apply before they left England to the Emigrant & Colonists Aid Corp. Whanganui got what was left over after everyone else had their pick.

I get the feeling he might have been a bit eccentric. He had a portrait of Oliver Cromwell and a (supposed) key to the Tower of London. Married the sister of my Montagu gg-grandmother.

Protective custody for a valuable cargo of 'brood mares' for the new colony. Govt officials didn't want women that were a moral threat or an economic burden. Often the ship's doctor, matron and captain bent the rules to make it more bearable.

Yes, imagine being locked below decks in the stifling heat of the Equator or during a storm in the roaring forties! Sometimes stroppy women protested by making a racket, banging pots and pans at this treatment. #OnePlaceWednesday

I'm amazed at the connections I'm finding between passengers - marriages, chain migration, a couple of swaggers arrested together twenty years after arrival. Not the promised land of milk & honey for many though.
