So this weekend is the 80th celebration of the freeing of the Netherlands in WW2.

My grandfather, who died from cancer before I was born, spent most of the war fighting in the Netherlands in land intentionally flooded by the Nazis.

It means so much that his contribution is still remembered.
My grandfather, William (Bill) Archibald McKenna, in his military getup. I think this is probably pre-going to war when he was training. He is standing in a field wearing knee-high socks, knee-length shorts, a military style button up shirt with the sleeves rolled up, and a military cap. He is smiling, his posture relaxed, his head tilted to one side. He looks so much like my Dad in this photo. He was part of the North Shore Regiment, which was part of the 8th Canadian Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Canadian Infantry division. He was a captain in his unit and promoted to major after the war. My grandfather's regiment landed in Sainr-Aubergine-sur-Mer (the eastern Edge of Juno Beach) on D-Day, although our family understanding is that his unit arrived on D-Day 4. He spent most of the war fighting in the Netherlands, but my grandmother recalled that he got dysentery after fighting a battle in a forest in Germany, after which he was sent back to England to recover. Tracking the movements of the North Shore regiment, they did indeed fight in a battle in a German forest: The Reichswald Forest, as part of Operation Veritable, which was the first Allied push into Germany. His regiment was part of the 8th Brigade, under the command of Brigadier Jim Roberts. They fought through heavy rain and flooding after a dam that had weakened due to German activity collapsed. But having fought in the flooded lands of the Netherlands, they were familiar with this kind of terrain and used amphibious vehicles called Buffalos to the ground. It was a victorious assault, with the Brits and Canadians attacking from the North in Operation Veritable, and the Americans coming from the south in a pincers move in Operation Grenade. My grandfather is pictured here in another part of Germany, near the Netherlands. A sign says, "To Friedeburg, 17km". Okay same makeup, different top for church choir rehearsal tonight and I got told by this elegant, put together older woman that she loves my bold style and I look like I just stepped out of a fashion magazine and she noticed my hair matches my makeup and she just made my whole fucking year. 🥲

So for a couple of years after my first fibro flare, which led to my diagnosis and caused huge brain fog, I couldn’t read. At all.

This year I JUST hit my goal of 125 books (not counting hard copy books).

And I've started reading short non-fiction pieces.

I'm proud of myself. 🥰

Dad gave me a sketch book for Christmas. Tonight I broke it in. Did a rough trace outline of the robin , branches, and 3 berries. Then sketched the rest, adding details and refining.

Snuggled in at home vs Christmas Day dinner with family.

Just over a year before she passed away,my Dad got this angel with changing fiberoptic lights for her. She was thrilled. She had had one for decades before this one, but it had died. It was so lovely to see it last night and think of her delight and joy when she received it.

Yesterday Dad and I decorated his house together for Christmas. Memories are hard after someone passes, but also so special. He and Mom got two different creches from two different congregations they served. And the tree decorations have so many memories from so many special people.
Creche made of stained glass received from Mom and Dad's first church after he was deaconed. Behind it is a window showing a pale wintery blue sky and fir and deciduous trees covered with snow. A Willow Tree creche set from Mom and Dad's last church before they retired. It's set on top of a piano with a beige runner beneath the set and a pale blue wall behind it. A small Christmas tree in a corner, with small coloured lights and lots of different ornaments of different kinds collected over many years. Under the tree is a wooden floor, and the tree skirt is a patchwork of different kinds of green, red, and white Christmas patterns. A shot of Dad's front hedge, coveted in snow, with the coloured lights he put out glowing through the snow. It's twilight out.

Incredible that this guy feels like he is entitlemed to police another person's creativity and enjoyment. And very telling that he looks down his nose at someone's enjoyment of fandom, as if it's lesser-than for some damn reason.

The author calls for a move towards radical change: We must use the Democrats' failures "to understand that until we face our existential dread with existential ecstasy and verve, we will also lose. And that, as soon as we return to our revolutionary movements, the sooner we will get to freedom."
"The point is this: we generally see calls for revolutionary change as inherently about *breaking* civic engagements. The opposite is the case. "Revolution, I other words, is good for the country. To be more specific: nonviolent revolutionary that seeks to build instead tear down is not only good for good for country, it is essential if we want to preserve democracy. "Since 2016, Democrats have made rhe mistake of seeing the destructive tendencies of the fascists they fought against, and assumed that people would be moved to protect American institutions. This is why they kept appealing to moderates: they hoped more people would stick with the institutions. But they got the wrong message. Just because people didn't want to destroy institutions didn't mean they didn't want revolutionary change. It meant they wanted *transformation* instead of *destruction*." (The author goes on to use the example of how the "defund the police" movement wasn't destructive, it was meant to reallocate resources directly into the community to help people)

Sitting under my heat pump staying warm. Watching one of my fave YouTube podcaster duos. Eating delicious apples with plain yogurt, cottage cheese, and nutmeg. Drinking a latte in one of my fave mugs, featuring medieval powerhouse, Julian of Norwich, and one of her most famous sayings. Life is good.

Nothing like curling up with a couple of cats and a local coffee company's latte on a snowy morning.

I love that Kins (top) and Gabe are a bonded pair. My previous cats were adopted a year apart from each other and didn't snuggle together until the end of their lives. These two play, snuggle, and pose beautifully together. This tickled me tho because they rarely use the bottom tier.

I've decided I'm gonna be sharing a lot of pics of my cats in the timeline to offer cuteness and calm breaks for folks. Meet Gabriel (aka Gabe, left) and Kinsley Mae (aka Kins). Adopted just prior to the pandemic from a rescue. They are siblings. Naughty and cute in equal measure.
