USIP staffers were alerted of the lockdown by an announcement over the PA system from security. The alert did not specify what was happening, just that people could not leave the building.

Even with a GOP controlled Congress, not everyone is monolithic even if it seems so from the outside. Keep up the calls, letters, visits to the Hill. It’s the only way we can salvage something. It matters to every person we help and every person who has dedicated their lives to this vital work.

The deeply dedicated staff of USAID are ready and willing to get back to work processing payments to organizations that feed malnourished children, administer measles vaccines, treat HIV, prevent youth from landing in gangs and cartels - all on behalf of the American people.

They asked us to help others in their caucus understand the situation and hear from constituents. Tomorrow, many more of USAID’s terminated and furloughed staff and contractors are going to the Hill armed with stories of canceled projects and broken trust and staff expertise put on admin leave.
