An indie game development studio that creates narrative driven RPG supplements.
Still working my way through the layout process. Iteration, reinvention, kill your darlings, and all that. This, I think, is as close as I can get to what I want on my own for a chapter intro.

Working on different, experimental design layouts for a new 5E supplement. I feel like I'm heading in an interesting direction, but who knows. Objectivity is haaaaaard. (so is graphic design)

Something I have to learn over and over again is to think and design small. I have so much I want to do, but relatively little capacity. Something small, well-done and polished is going to matter way more than any grand project. #IndieDev #GameDesign #TTRPG #Design #BoardGames

First ever article about Catacolyte published at Geek Native. I don't know why this makes me so happy, but it feels like a huge step! #games #rpg #ttrpg #gamedesign

Richard Nguyen's art is clean, evocative, and refreshingly weird. Thanks so much for helping make my work real! :) #Art

I've been thinking, and Dragon's Dogma 2 was some of the most fun I've ever had playing low level characters. Too bad the late game didn't really hold up imo. #videogames #dd2 #lowlevel #immersive

I hate machine gunning Eldritch Blast like it’s D-Day so I put together a support subclass for DnD 5E 2024. I worked the patron into the class features so you have an identifiable force to play off of instead of some vague “benefactor.” Download it for free at www.catacolytegames.com!

I figured it out. Nobunaga's Ambition is a really intricate game. Taking castles needs a lot of prep work, like issuing Covert commands to destroy the castle walls, or baiting them out by inciting a revolt, or even invading with a small force to make them sally out. Really fun game so far.

Nobunaga's Ambition is really hard QQ Someone please save me. This stupid fucking watchtower has shredded over 10k troops. They just sit there for days bashing it before routing because of troop loss... What am I doing wrong? Koei strategy games are hard

I've gotten really into Cabernet, a "2D narrative game" about vampires. The illustrations are beautiful and the plot is compelling. The writing veers towards YA territory sometimes, though. I mean, these vampires have like no edge to them. Really fun!

Vinícius Campos really came through for this art commission for the Hospital of Quiet Minds narrative dungeon from Sins of Our Mother. He's a great artist. Really love his work! www.artstation.com/vinnicampzz

Are there any good war tabletop games? I'm looking into trying Warhammer, but that'll take a bit to get minis up and painted. I just kind of miss Total War, I guess?

Kotor I & II were the bets and no one can change my mind. BG3 close second.

What's more important for D&D? Prep or improv? I used to think prep hands down. Now, improvising lets me adapt way faster to the stories my players pursue. Prep pushes me more and more down a single track with few to no switches.

I feel like I'm never satisfied by ship combat in ttrpgs and rpgs in general. Deadfire's felt awful for no particular reason... Starfinder didn't do it for me either. I've always wanted to play D&D nautical adventure, but the ship stuff just gives me pause.

@robinlvalentine.bsky.social Hey, welcome! I'm a big fan of your work at PCGamer :) Hopefully more people follow you over.

Maybe this isn't fair, but I find the traditional layouts in D&D and TTRPGs incredibly stale... I don't have a perfect solution, but experimenting with design has been really, really fun. Is there anything else out there that's more innovative and modern in design?

What's "balance" in D&D and does anyone really care? I've asked this question a bunch and the answers always seem to trend towards "The DM creates balance on the fly" and "there is no balance, just interesting encounters." Is this really all there is to this rpg?

Give in to sin and reap the rewards with Sins of Our Mother for D&D 5E. Never play a TTRPG the same way again with this fresh new take on tradition :)
