There is a type of book/movie that I will criticize as being a "one damned thing after another" story. Now I feel like I have to read this to see if it's the one "one damned thing after another" story that I might actually like.

It's so interesting -- I actually double checked before posting to make sure I hadn't imagined the whole thing, it seems like something I might have read in a steampunk novel or something rather than real history.

Fun Fact -- there was an early attempt to make a pneumatic subway. Is there really not already a book about this? It seems like there would have to be? Or maybe it's 30 separate PhD theses waiting to be compiled into one book.

Seriously, You Tube has recommended multiple videos to me lately where people say they don't like the book because they "guessed the twist", like it's an old Twilight Zone episode or something.
