A moment of fun!

(The climbing trail at Big Creek in Newport, Oregon.)

Firewood for the next *two* years is split and curing. Walnut from limbs trimmed by the county road crew and cherry thinned from our little firewood patch behind the shed.

Diversity of food on the farm these days: late-planted watermelon plants with baby fruit; dry beans just starting to dry down. And carrots for the winter!

On these endless hot days, super-grateful for irrigation and the Home Orchard.

The Glacier Peak Wilderness is looking so good.

Plants keep growing.

Immigrant family, friends, and neighbors are still important.

Um...Amtrak is rad?!

The forest is full of surprises. Two high-severity fires atop one another in the Whitewater Creek Valley, west of Mount Jefferson.

There's fire-killed old-growth Ponderosa, carpets of conifer seedlings, some of the largest downed trees I've ever seen, and outrageous pink-blooming rhododendrons.

Some good news from the early returns (May 2025 election):

Both the Chemeketa Community College bond renewal and a new operating levy for the City of Salem are passing at the moment.

Y'all this is so cool...

High-severity wildfire at 4,000 feet in the Old Cascades of Oregon, silver snags and charred stumps.

At the base of every stump is a baby fir or mountain hemlock. All that snow slowly melts as water for the soon to be sapling. Char on the stump warms the air.

So cool.

If you live in Marion, Polk, or Yamhill County, vote YES to renew Chemeketa Community College's bond in this month's election.

You should have your ballots by now.
No tax rate increase.
Protects our community college investments.
Offers career training courses.
Important in troubled times.

There's so much life in the most extreme places.

(Setums and paintbrush blooming this week.)

First irrigation in the fields yesterday, which means it is raining this morning!

May Day marches happening this Thursday!

The world is beautiful and continues to grow food.

And pressure works. Your voice matters. Stick together.

Shout-out to Professor @davidho.bsky.social for really really putting the scale of carbon dioxide removal in context: "has to go from something most people never heard of to the biggest industry the world has ever seen."

Everybody's doing it. Tillage season has arrived in the Willamette Valley!

Except, dang there's a ton of uncertainty about what markets are going to look like.

It is 65 on the farm right now, and the rapini is popping (arugula flower bud close-up).

The seasons turn.
And pressure on lawmakers works.

The Imbolc radicchio is beautiful.

It reminds me that we have an inter-dependent world. The sun returns to some of us while it fades away from others.

Moreover, protect trans kids.

Sunset and cabbage

Fight fights together.

Together we can do great things.

Like letting a cat climb up and fall asleep on your lap.
Like standing up for your neighbor.

It is a beautiful morning on the Willamette River.

signs of island time: floodwaters silently cruising north through the lower field and bright, tender green buds opening.
