The question that frequently pops up in my head when hearing about interactions that made people feel 'unsafe' is: *Were* you unsafe? Or are you, like many white people, made extremely uncomfortable by confrontation to the point that when it happens you feel like you're in danger?

Focusing on learning to tell the difference between being unsafe and being uncomfortable is, in my opinion, *the* most important step white people can take towards fostering genuine community. imho white people specifically have been socialized to think that discomfort = being unsafe.
