I just finished the book of Malachi, which means my annual cover-to-cover Bible reading is complete! I have read all 66 books of the Protestant canon, having started on January 1st of this year. This makes something like my ninth time doing this consecutively.

Because of Luther’s actions taken on this day in 1517, my husband and I can be married in a church, I can be an ordained pastor, and my sisters in Christ can be clergy. For all the harms Protestantism has wrought, I’m thankful for these unique gifts Protestantism has given to the Church catholic.

Happy National Coming Out Day, my friends! This gay pastor loves you—but more importantly, God loves you just as you are. God made you in all the vibrant and beautiful ways that make you “you.” Whether you’re already out or still in the closet, nothing will change that truth.

I bought this book a few years ago and never read it because of the heaviness of the content. One really has to be in the right headspace to grapple with this kind of trauma-informed scholarship. But since my new job is working with vulnerable populations, now is the time to read it.

I would encourage you to listen to Jewish folks, read Jewish sources on the historical impact of using Pharisee as an insult, and read this groundbreaking anthology produced by Jewish biblical scholars.

I spent six hours today watching the #CharlieKirkFuneral. And, as a mainline clergyman, I think sitting with this book by @briankaylor.bsky.social should be mandatory for those of us who identify as mainline Protestants before we point our fingers at our evangelical counterparts.

I don’t know who is watching the #CharlieKirkFuneral, but Pastor Rob McCoy—his pastor—used his allotted time to say (conservative) politics is an onramp for faith, called for an altar call, shamed clergy who didn’t embrace Kirk and his message, and followed all this up with the National Anthem. 1/2
