Te Tiriti (Treaty of Waitang) has governed Crown-Māori relations since 1840. The Bill, which passed 1st reading immediately prior to the haka, imposes a reinterpretation of the treaty that would see all NZ-ers a “equal,” removing protections for Māori people, who make up 20% of New Zelanders.
