I haven't heard of Mia and the Lightcasters. I really enjoyed Varjak Paw too. I read it recently. Have you read Tyger? That's my favourite of SF Said's books.

I think a 3 chapter rule sounds like a good idea. It's enough to know you're not enjoying it but not too much that you are reading it for ages.

I think that's how it should be. When I was at school we had to finish books, so I think it lingers from that time.

Fortunately now I think there's more research around reading for pleasure and the child's choice than there was back then.
