I'd never heard "Four Pails" before. I was haunted by it for a while. I can't explain why I'm so moved by the sad, vague hopefulness of: "Once I would have answered clearly, now I only think I'm nearly sure..."

I saw Peter Hammill in the 80's at the Roxy. In a club was full of punks and glam rockers. He came out and sat at the piano, and everyone sat on the dance floor and just listened, quietly. It was extraordinary. Johnny Rotten, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel -- cite him as an influence.
