I’ve always seen it as a meditation on marriage, relationships, and fear of commitment. It’s one of the formative “concept musicals” so it functions a little differently than a traditional book musical does en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concept...

That might actually be the most memory-holed part of all. I remember reading it as a kid and thinking "Welp, none of this weirdly specific political allegory stuff was in the Garland film!"

The weird liberal image rehab/baby girlification of George W. Bush is an unthinkable evolution of how his presidency was thought of at the time and honestly terrifies me for how Trump will be remembered when someone worse comes along.
