A folklorist explains why the Icelandic Saga's don't mention the northern lights.
It's because, apparently, they weren't visible in Iceland from the time of settlement until the late Middle Ages. The auroral zone is sort of doughnut-shaped and surrounds the magnetic pole, so it moves with the pole's migration. When the sagas were written, Iceland wasn't in the path of the oval.
