First bird of my day: a black bullet shooting across the garden to land on the fence at first light. I think it was a wren, but it could have been a robin. It disappeared over the other side before I could be certain. #FirstBirdOfMyDay

First bird of my day: a magpie on the neighbour's roof, its feathers fluffed up against the cold, back-lit by the morning sun. #FirstBirdofMyDay

Jackdaws! What seemed like hundreds of them swirling above my head as they left their roost and headed for the fields. Chacking and dawing to each other as they flew. #FirstBirdOfMyDay

First bird of my day: looking out of my front bedroom window, I spied a brown thing moving in the grassy field across the road. It was a lone curlew, walking up and down and occasionally stopping to dig in the soil. #FirstBirdOfMyDay

First bird of my day: a steady stream of herring gulls moving inland from Morecambe Bay, twisting and turning to counter the strong, blustery wind. FirstBirdOfMyDay
