We use Danish administrative data and follow individuals from the start of their PhDs. Before having children, men and women in academia follow similar career paths. But following parenthood, we find that mothers are 15 pp less likely than fathers to remain employed as faculty at universities.

🚨 New WP Alert! 🚨

In 2010, Denmark launched a controversial policy labeling certain public housing areas as “Ghettos” based on high immigrant populations, crime, and unemployment.

The goal? To change the socio-demographic makeup of these neighborhoods.

Did it work? 🤔 (1/4)

This is *such* an important paper.
Policy implications are key. As a field we need to do better at recognizing the importance of early connections (often unrelated to quality or productivity) on publication outcomes. In the long run ignoring those will make us loose out on talent and big ideas.
A new paper from the Journal of Political Economy investigates how PhD program ranking, department status, and other author connections impact peer review decisions. Read the full findings here: ow.ly/sfLx50UiGII #EconSky
