(lol, can you tell I dealt with burnout early in my day job + writing career? You do have to hustle but it’s ok to be human, too. In fact that’s the prerequisite to being art imho: being human.)

Finally, be prepared for your creative output to vary depending on the season/your other obligations/holidays, etc. Try to plan your projects around cyclical events you know are coming (eg month end if you’re an accountant, plan to do smaller tasks or fill your creative well instead of going hard)

This is also a general tip from school but it helps me a lot: plan not only what you’re going to work on in a day, but where you’re going to work on it. That way when you’re tired early in the morning/late after your day job, it’s one less thing to think about and you can focus on your filmmaking.

I find also making sure I have time to refill the creative well is important. Talk to other filmmakers. Go see films. Visit the art gallery. Read a book. Whatever gets you creatively inspired. It’ll propel you forward more than just grinding all the time.

This is mostly writing related but: set goals but be realistic about them. Also, set breaks for yourself when you can relax guilt-free from your day job AND film. It can be a few minutes a day, a few hours a week and a few days a quarter. Whatever you need to not burn yourself out working 24/7.
