I agree with that as long as the most wealthy people /companies aren't allowed to circumvent it while "normal" people take the hit

That's exactly where I would like to see a government concentrating its efforts. Closing down tax evasion and aggressive tax avoidance and taxing oligarchs and mega corporations on their real wealth, "earned" or otherwise

I want those privileged with the most excess wealth to have to contribute more to the society that gave it to them

Exactly. When they were in opposition they did everything to put people off (but won anyway because of flawed FPTP and Tory Corruption Fatigue) but now they're in power they constantly make entirely unnecessary and ridiculous promises

But they have ruled out reversing it in any meaningful way in Starmer's lifetime despite their being no advantage of saying such a thing

It was just a really stupid thing to say for which she'll have to take the consequences. There's no need to say anything like this once in power and besides, it's just naive to think that in the current economic climate that growth would be realistic or that they could strip public services any more
