🛡️ The European Commission unveils its new #DemocracyShield today – a plan to protect the EU from foreign interference and manipulation. But can the EU defend democracy without turning it into a security project?

Crikey. That's a lot of pent-up political frustration. Not a good omen
Ireland, Presidential Election: With the majority of first preference votes counted, the number of spoiled ballots has hit a record high of over 200,000. At the last Presidential Election, it stood at just 18,438.

The CJEU has fast-tracked this case in which the EU Commission is challenging Hungary's 'defence of sovereignty' law - the hearing is set for next Tuesday (Sep 16th)
We did it! We built the largest lawsuit to defend civic space in EU history! 15 countries + the European Parliament have joined the case against Hungary’s foreign agents law targeting dissident voices. A major step for democracy, but the fight is not over. Oral hearings are next. Stay tuned.

Great episode from @theresthistory.bsky.social on the myths that sprang up around German WWI blood sacrifices. One detail omitted was that Hitler made a point of visiting Langemark cemetery in 1940, emphasising again the importance of the myth to nazi propaganda. podcasts.apple.com/be/podcast/t...

When people talk about Latin American narco-gangs being multinational enterprises, they don't simply mean their activities extend across borders and continents. Brazil's PCC also has legal and accounting units. I wouldn't be surprised if a sustainability department is also in the works.

The jury is still out on whether Trump's policies are economic folly, as well as authoritarian nastiness. Seems to be a strong element of wishful thinking on the former. (H/t @adamtooze.bsky.social)

It's described as a "first step in a process that can be further expanded over time to cover additional areas and continue to improve market access."

Trump and his family have profited by $330m from their crypto business while promoting deregulation. Good reporting by @ericlipton.nytimes.com on what is a blatant act of corruption, even if by a peculiar twist of US governance the President is exempt from federal conflict of interest laws.
TODAY the NYT publishes an investigation into the Trump memecoin $TRUMP and how it has turned into a extraordinary venue for foreign influence campaigns. What we are seeing is potentially corrupt attempts to change US policy by paying the Trump family money. This is no "Russian Hoax" nyti.ms/4kkv7D7
