That it's *so many* people's lifelines, and much of the Baby Boom generation will soon age out of driving, means we're in for a rough couple decades. Either we choose safety and a lot of seniors lose their independence or we choose independence and a lot of people die. There's no good solution.

Spend some time on Nextdoor or watching public comment, seriously. It's never just been "my backyard". It's "my neighbor's backyard", or "a backyard somewhere in my neighborhood or city", or something even farther out. It's always been an attempt to control what happens to property they don't own.

This is the sort of image that NIMBYs would use to try to scare other NIMBYs - those 6 story towers are stealing light and looming over those unfortunate (and more virtuous) single family homes - but it looks fine for the most part. Agree with the other commenter it'd be better with shared walls.

Just wanted to thank you for this breakdown. If (fingers crossed) Newsom signs SB 79, there's going to be several rounds of debate regarding whether specific stops should be included. The criteria are hard to parse.

I like this. It's "discuss your salary with your coworkers and peers", but for housing. The only ones losing out are employers and landlords, respectively.

The loss of cubicles and move to open office spaces is certainly one of the things that's kept me away from in-person office work since COVID forced us all home.

This is the biggest issue. A few restaurants around here tried going to "tip is included/we pay our employees fairly" pricing and people are SO BAD AT MATH that these restaurants had to give up and go back to tips.

Same thing in reverse is places adding surcharges instead of raising prices.

Those prices would shock a Parisian. Small pastries were €0.8-2 and loaves of bread were maybe €2-3 when I was there this summer, and that was in the center of Paris. Could have been cheaper elsewhere. At my local French bakery in San Diego, it's $5 for pastries, and bread is $7-10. So yeah 😕

That "time spent at home" chart is just work-from-home, isn't it? Restaurants, bars, and other public spaces are just as packed as they ever were. But there's just a huge Swath of the country that doesn't need to drive to an office anymore.

Hell, ignoring what insurance covers, the largest expense when things get stolen from a car is often the damage to the car. Those windows aren't cheap to fix.
