A pic of Lilian Seenoi-Barr and text saying: THE PURPOSEFUL MISINFORMATION SMEARS OF THE DERRY MAYOR Ever since becoming the Mayor of Derry City & Strabane, SDLP ClIr Lilian Seenoi-Barr has faced a barrage of lies, misinformation & racism. Some, have already been dealt with by the law, while others are just ramping up their attacks. Some are clearly organised far-right groups, others are just sad racist individuals. We have decided to outline some of the nonsense, and challenge it. SWIPE > A pic of Lilian celebrating being elected with SDLP colleagues and text saying: THE CLAIM That Lilian was not elected as a Councillor. She was chosen for Mayor instead of being elected. She is "selected, not elected" THE TRUTH She was first co-opted into her Council seat in June 2021, when another ClIr resigned. This is a process that all parties use when one of their Clirs or MLAs resign a seat. That being said, she then won the seat in the 2023 Council election, by being voted in by the electorate. She became Mayor by being nominated by her party. All Mayors in Northern Ireland are chosen this way. We elect Clirs and then the main parties of each Council share the Mayor position between them. She is no different to any other Mayor in this country. 2/7 > A pic of Lilian from the day she became Mayor and text saying: THE CLAIM Two other SDLP Councillors were unfairly passed for the Mayorship THE TRUTH There is no official qualification or path to be allocated the Mayorship for a particular Clir. When it's a particular party's time to chose a Mayor from their Clirs, they can pick any. Every single party does this. Sometimes it's a newly elected one, sometimes it's someone who's been there the longest. You can have the OPINION that this is wrong, and certainly the SDLP have stated they will clarify the steps to be taken for nominating future Mayors, but neither the party or Lilian did anything wrong by putting her name forward for the role. 3/7 > A pic of Lilian appearing on BBC Sunday Politics and text saying: THE CLAIM She called Irish people "terrorists" THE TRUTH Lilian went on BBC Sunday Politics last summer during the height of the race riots happening in Belfast & Dublin. These riots seen far-right thugs walking through areas of the cities & destroying shop fronts they believed to be owned by people not originally from Ireland. They were also violent & destructive. Lilian correctly labelled these people "terrorists". They were targeting minorities, businesses & being violent. They were terrorising communities! At no point was she referring to Irish people generally or even to those whose opinion she disagreed with. 4/7 >
