"More coffee, hon?" Sarah appeared beside the table, pot in hand and a knowing smile on her face. "Please." Lou held up her mug. "I know I'm taking up space. I promise I'll clear out before the lunch rush starts." Sarah waved her off with a laugh. "Honey, you tip by the hour and better than anyone who'll come in for lunch. Stay as long as you want." Lou grinned and watched Sarah move on to the next table, her practiced efficiency something to admire. The Silver Fork had been Sarah's domain for as long as Lou could remember, and the woman knew every piece of gossip in town before anyone else. It made working from a booth here both entertaining and slightly dangerous.

"How'd the meeting go, Mrs. C?" Betty asked a woman with gray curls and bright pink reading glasses hanging from a chain around her neck. "Oh, you know. Crisis and opportunity all mixed together. We're scrambling to find a new treasurer for the festival since Nancy has always taken care of it but she’s off in Portland for the summer with the new grand-baby. Six weeks out and no one to handle the money." "What do they need to do?" Betty said, wiping down the table next to theirs.  "Track vendor payments, handle the budget, keep us organized. Basic bookkeeping, really." "Oh, that's all you need?" Betty turned toward the counter, raising her voice. "Hey, Reed?" He swiveled on his stool, eyebrows raised. "Can you help the festival committee out? Their treasurer is gone and they don't have anyone else." Reed blinked, glancing from Betty to the table of women, all of whom were now looking at him with expressions of hopeful expectation. He didn't know what being treasurer for a small-town festival involved, but how complicated could it be? "Sure," he said. "What do you need?" The woman Betty had called Mrs. C beamed at him. "Bless you, dear. Community center tomorrow evening at seven. We'll fill you in on everything then." Reed nodded and turned back to his lunch, already wondering what exactly he'd just volunteered for. But it was a small town, and he was only here for six weeks. How big a project could one summer festival really be?
