my guess is that flashbacks in manga are usually displayed in panels with dark frames. The two black borders in 4:3 could be trying to emulate that, maybe?

It reminds me the yt series "Too Much Future" when they finish the first Fallout game wondering where the "Fallout humor" that the series is so known for originated from, and then realized it didn't come from the actual game, but from the manual.

I like to believe this is a skill that can be learned through practice, but interacting with people through touch and words while they're in their most vulnerable moments doesn't give you many windows to learn through error.
