Its not even a divide between retributive vs rehabilitative sentencing any more. Talk long enough with such a person about crime, and you will get a list of what certain criminals 'deserve' that reads like a modern Dante's Inferno. They believe jail should be cruel and deadly.

A core belief of self-described conservative voters in the US is that criminals deserve everything that happens to them in prison, with only a little variation in how far it should go. Its not hard to goad a conservative into describing their preferred extreme retribution for certain crimes.

Well, at least we no longer have to wonder whether the admiral was foolish, pressured, or complicit.

I think the only real reason that democrats should keep hammering on this is that so many republicans dont want them to... like, if it was easy to explain away or cover up the wrongdoing - or even just ignore it till the media gets bored - Trump would have done so. Instead every day it gets worse.
