Talking comics & comics in education on Tiktok & YouTube
In two weeks I’ll be part of a panel at #AnimeNYC spotlighting educators who use manga in the classroom. This is my first time doing a panel on this topic, so I’m excited to share what I’ve been doing with my students for the last few years in my classes!

Besides the Kirby 4th World Series (which are must reads of course) my personal favs are the Walt Simonson Orion series, the Tom Peyer/Rachel Pollack New Gods & the recently released YA graphic novels Mr. Miracle: The Great Escape by Varian Johnson/Daniel Isles & Barda by Ngozi Ukazu are excellent.

As a long time fan of New Gods, I’m surprised more people haven’t connected Mantis to the Bugs, the lower classes of New Genesis. This could really elevate Mantis as a character in the plot moving forward. And speaking of plot movements, what is Metron scheming…

The return of Maxwell Lord puts him in a very interesting place as a third party in the hunt for the reborn New God. Acting, seemingly, as an agent of Metron. However, the omega symbol on his forehead gives me pause considering its connections to Darkseid…

This sequence was VERY intriguing. First, V takes the bold step of separating one of the Forever People from his usual group. Seraphin, the cowboy cosplayer, has clearly been Going Through It. What has caused this schism from the Forever People? What does this split mean for the Infinity Man?

An interesting detail revealed here about our New New God: he was found and adopted by his parents. This creates an interesting parallel between the child & his soon to be hunter/savior Orion & Mr. Miracle—both adopted children. Very excited to see where the backstory of this kid is going next

I ADORE this sequence. Evan Cagle has proven himself to be a terrific artist of detailed sci-fi cityscapes & tech, but his physical acting and expressions in this sequence are beautiful. So much character expressed in all three characters that pairs beautifully with Ram V’s script

Wanted to draw attention to this sequence drawn by Cagle with the firey writing, the traditional method The Source typically communicates with people

Some beautiful prose here by Ram V describing Himon waxing poetically on what will become known as the Anti-Life equation: the removal of thought, creativity, inspiration.

Okay a lot to unpack here. First, a masterful layout double page spread by Lonergan. We get tons of cameos here ranging from characters we’ve seen like Metron to Mantis, Forager, Granny Goodness, Fastbak, The Female Furies, The Forever, People, Tigra (Orion’s mom), Heggra (Darkseid’s mom) and MORE

These guest artist opening sequences are wonderful, in part because of the talent on display but also because they evoke for me the Walt Simonson run on Orion with its Tales of the New Gods back-up stories.

All right let’s jump into the wonderful New Gods #2 by Ram V, Evan Cagle, Jesse Lonergan, Francesco Segala, & Tom Napolitano. I need this book to run 100+ issues

And finally, loved seeing the good folks at the Kirby Museum getting some recognition! Can’t recommend this book enough!

And here we get the latest addition to the New Gods pantheon: Kamal! In an interview with OwenLikesComics on YouTube, Ram V alludes to taking inspiration for this character from Kalki, the prophesied final avatar of Vishnu. We see an allusion to Kalki’s steed in the text as well.

I love any time we get to see Orion’s “Darkseid face”—a stark reminder of the literal dark side Orion has to keep at bay.

Speaking of family dynamics, I LOVED seeing Orion & Scott together here. I don’t think enough writers have capitalized on what their dynamic as “brothers” would be like and the mission Orion tasks Scott with is a terrific hook for the rest of the series.

My favorite superhero trapped in a situation I’ve been in with my own kid. The King/Gerards Mr. Miracle series was always a bit questionably canonical, but I think V has thread the needle well here by bringing the family dynamic to the fore while allowing the King/Gerards book to remain untouched.

I really love this moment here (Cagle sells the hell out of the body language & facial expressions). Lightray I feel is often the most underdeveloped of the New Gods, and this little bit of tension is palpable (tired of being second to Orion, perhaps?) & could become a great plot beat down the line

First appearance of a new character named Akala. Don’t get too much info on him in this issue but their design is sick & I’m looking forward to seeing more from them.

Cagle & Segala’s interpretation of New Genesis is breathtaking here. Feels more grounded than Kirby, but still stunning. Truly a home of gods. We also get Lightray & Fastbak! Fastbak is the New Gods equivalent of a gear head who’d rather race & work on his aero-pads than do anything else

Metron receiving a prophecy, flanked by a quote from Himon, a citizen of New Genesis eno lived on Apokolips & becomes a mentor for Mr. Miracle before his great escape. V’s narration here, of darkness being weaker than light because it is defined by it, perfectly encapsulates Kirby’s 4th World Themes

We get the first (and final?) appearance of Amaxazu, a cosmic entity who’s appearance reminds me of the Promethean Galaxy giants from New Gods #5, beings that tried, and failed to pass through the Source wall and now float through the void.

Beginning at the end, Darkseid’s death, as depicting in DC All-In Special ushering in a new era of these new gods, with a fitting allusion to the very first page of Kirby’s New Gods #1. I’ve never seen Jorge Fornes’ art depicting something on a massive cosmic scale like this. Incredible stuff.

Buzzing with excitement over the release of New Gods by Ram V, Evan Cagle, Jorge Fornes, Francesco Segala, & Tom Napolitano, so here’s some annotations & thoughts on this stellar first issue… #newgods #dccomics #jackkirby
