Just a little too “on the nose” for my comfort.

I’m not even sure how to describe this collection of pictures and tributes from two former students: Stephanie Moncada and Franny Robledo.

Set aside the images they chose or the messages the wrote. The love they had for me shines through in the effort it took to create this artifact.

Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.”

Two friends in college gifted me this book, as it reminded them of me. Including Angela, the first girl I ever loved. Also here the receipt from the dinner I told her how I felt and she told me she loved someone else. A lot of pain in that story.

Aquacadet Fundraiser by Jeff Ra, c. 2000.

My college roommate introduced us to the musical group The Aquabats, and then proceeded to start a fundraiser to sponsor my joining the fanclub - including his original artwork. God love him.

International Poet of Merit Awards.

That time I won an online poetry competition and got published in a book of poetry / fell for a clever marketing scheme where they marked up the price on the books and awards they sent me. Ah, to be young and stupid.

Donna Johnson’s Ethics Exam essay, c. 2004.

In which the writer accuses Dr. King of attempting to sound “pseudo-intelligent.” A classic of the student essay genre!

Post-9/11 Ribbon.

From the moment I learned of the 9/11 terror attacks in NYC, DC, and PA, I was worried about how American politics would respond. I wore this ribbon during Seattle U.’s orientation activities that week as a nod to the victims, not to the fighting that followed.

Sculpture of me from Breeze Galindo, a student of mine in L.A., c. 2003.

This is both the first and best effigy of me ever made by a student.

Candle from the 2002 Search Retreat at Seattle U.

I’ve spent a lifetime in ministry just chasing after the good I did / the good done through me on that one retreat. Sometimes I get close.

Washington Football Team bandanna, signed by former coach Norv Turner.

Trips to training camp were an annual ritual, usually around my buddy Matt’s August 8th birthday. One year, my autograph pitch to Coach Norv Turner was, “Do you want to sign my head?” He agreed!

Pogs.

Remember Pogs? Probably not, based on autocorrect trying to revert my typing to “Pigs.”

A birthday gift from my friend Andy.

He presented it to me at the airport in Seattle, wrapped in a paper bag and much ceremony. Can you believe it was once yellow?

An original “Masters of the Universe” action figure, but more a story of perseverance.

I am known to be a hard worker. This figure is my origin story. The head compresses to spray a mist, which my childhood thumbs were initially incapable of accomplishing. But I kept trying. And still do.

Team Jersey from my first 5k, SOME’s 2007 Turkey Trot.

Ran a 22:10 with my best friend Matt. Felt like a respectable time.

My Gonzaga College High School hat.

Mom got this for me and four of my grade school friends when we all learned we had been accepted to Gonzaga. Even before I was “Cappy,” this was a signature of my look.

My very first pair of Samba Classics.

I forget the exact count, but over four or five years these shoes went from my last year at Seattle U, through my time in L.A., and all around my 18 months in Occupied Palestine. Exceptionally well-travelled. I once thought I would have them bronzed.

My Gold Tie from St. Mary’s Academy in Inglewood, CA - my first teaching job.

Those who know know how important the ties are at SMA. I had to earn this one as a first year teacher by performing the Cha-Cha slide in front of the whole student body. Turn it out!

The jersey I wore and the t-shirt reward for the only intramural championship I won in college.

I fell in with a group that competed in multiple sports across three seasons: soccer, football, basketball, softball. We finished second place every time but basketball my junior year.

In 2007, my mom moved to Florida and took with her my 26-year-old self’s room. Now, she’s retiring and downsizing, and I am tasked with disassembling that past - deciding what to keep and what to let go. I wonder what I will discover about the man I once was. #Nostalgia
