I love much of a farce this game is. The weird laughing before the title, the wimpy jabs Ludicrus does and the strange noise he makes when he's hit, the punny opponents, the total anticlimax that is the ending - I can tell the devs must've had some fun with this. Love the comic in the manual, too.
First story panel. The text reads: "Ludicrus works at the Arena cleaning away lion droppings." The panel depicts Ludicrus, a short Roman soldier with a big nose, sweeping away lion feces as said lion urinates on the ground in front of two taller gladiators wearing merry expressions. They are in the Arena armory (signified by a hanging sign that says "Armoury") with various spears and axes behind them. Second story panel. The text reads: "Ludicrus goes to the "Ceasar's Arms" and gets happy. After many jars he tells the off-duty gladiators that they are pussy-cats and that Ceasar is the biggest pussy of them all." The panel depicts a scene in a pub being tended to by a mustachioed bald bartender polishing a beer mug, while Ludicrus sloppily drinks a beer in front of two bored-looking gladiators who are also drinking. There is a chandelier with candles above the barkeep, and a dart board beside him that has a single dart lodged into its top. Third story panel. The text reads: "He tells them that, if they give him five pints, a gumshield and a Stanley knife, he'll do in the lot of 'em." The panel depicts another scene in the tavern, where an intoxicated Ludicrus smugly taps the nose of a grizzled gladiator while his buddy watches by angrily, before he swings his head to the left to lustfully gaze into a woman's chest. The action is taking place in front of a stone wall with a lit torch and a couple of barrels of beer with faucets affixed to them on the top left, and a spilled mug can be seen behind Ludicrus. Final story panel. The text reads: "A centurian has a word in Ceasar's ear. He is so impressed by Ludicrus' boast, at they invite him to demonstrate his skills. They assure him that he'll really make a mark in the Arena -- that, or a small stain." The panel depicts two burly Roman guards (the rightmost one has "Make Love AND War" written on the back of his tunic) carrying off a stunned and worried Ludicrus to the Arena, signified by a wall topped with spikes adorned with a sign reading "To the Arena". In the top left corner, a small circle depicts the conversation between the centurion and Caesar that occurred before Ludicrus' capture, with Caesar being depicted as an ugly man with large jowls, a beak-like nose and a pin on his robes that reads "Ceasar Numero Uno".

I was always a Billy the Tough player, but one cannot resist his mechanical charms. As an aside, have a better res version of the second image. (thank you for the follow, BTW!)

You exceeded expectations, then! I had a Japanese guidebook for JF2 and on one page talking about the EU version of JF1 (which is included with JP JF2), it notes the unlock criteria for Super and Hyper, which are getting 1 million points in Normal and 2 million pointts in Extra, respectively.
Translation (via Google Translate): In the European version, once you have completed the first playthrough, you can automatically select the second playthrough (Extra stages). Clearing the first playthrough with over 1 million points will unlock the Super stages, while clearing the second playthrough with over 2 million points will unlock the Hyper stages. In addition to the standard controls, you can also dash, dive, and perform 6-step jumps.
