Fateh and Jacob had a lock on the money and the endorsements from the beginning and Fateh was obviously not going to carry enough of the city to win. And definitely not in an off-cycle year. Everything about this was super predictable. Hope we learn some lessons and we don't have to do this again!

Donors aren't going to give to candidates who are long-shots. They want to spend their money where it matters. And candidates have to be serious about raising money and serious about running. This is particularly true against an incumbent. It's a full time job for more than a year and no less.

Davis and Hampton couldn't break through because they were both running against established politicians. That matters because orgs are not going to take a risk to endorse against a politician who will be in some elected office in January and able to hold it against them.

Progressives got behind a candidate with a low ceiling of support and obvious liabilities. Multiple council members who endorsed Fateh and put all their energy behind him even acknowledged he could not win. Fateh was never going to be Mamdani. He didn't have the charisma or the comms for that.
