Basic bee facts every day at 3pm.

# 40

#Bumblebees have four wings.
The two back wings are smaller and are usually attached to the bigger front wings by a row of hooks.
This can sometimes lead to the mistaken impression that they only have two wings.

Word of the morning is ‘williwaw’ (19th century): a sudden violent squall or a toppling gust of wind.

Goes well with ‘thunderplump’: a sudden downpour that soaks you to the skin in seconds.

For day two of my tree advent calendar, I've chosen this graceful twin-topped alder. When I see it, I get that dose of oxytocin that tells me I'm relaxing. I'm safe. I'm close to home.

A late winter view of the walk up to town. Come June and July we spot glow-worms displaying in the bank on the right during the walk back home from the pub on warm evenings
