Vancouver
With the Blue Jays playing for a World Series championship and an atmospheric river hammering Vancouver, I'm just going to go ahead and call it.

Halloween is cancelled.

Sorry kids. Maybe next year.

The analysis of the BC E-bike rebate program has been released by UBC.

Key findings:
* Lower income recipients biked more 🚲
* High income households had more carbon savings (less 🚗)
* Overall abatement cost of $1300/tonne CO2

The WeatherCan app gives me air quality notifications and it's been horrible in Winnipeg all summer.
My family says it's like hanging out at a bonfire. If they spend too much time outdoors their throats are scratchy. This is awful (and entirely predictable given the world's fossil fuel addiction).

Signed up to be an organ donor. I thought I had done it years ago but apparently the old system (on your driver's license) isn't valid anymore. This was a simple process from the BC Health Gateway.

I think this might be the coolest school in Canada.
Lord Nelson Elementary in Vancouver has a small track, a cool playground, and a pair of second floor slides.

What is Fort Langley doing with their dog poop that they need separate receptacles?

Staples are definitely the gold standard for most buildings because they support a range of bike types (like cargo bikes). But I don't mind coat-hangers for kids bikes.
This is what some of the existing racks look like. It would take a lot of staples to handle those.

New bike racks at my daughter's school. And a shiny new scooter rack. First time I've ever seen one of those. Thanks VSB. Those will be well used.

Hopefully, in 2027 the City of Vancouver will create a permanent school street (24/7), with enhancements like seating, planters, and play fixtures.

You can help make that happen by filling out a City of Vancouver's survey (deadline June 13 - today!) #SchoolStreet

The reduced car-traffic when #SchoolStreets is running has made things safe enough for our daughter to walk to school on her own on Fridays this year, a time savings for us and huge boon to her independence.

At our school, we started with a 4-week pilot in 2023.
In 2024, we expanded it to 6-weeks.
This year, we ran it all-year (Sep-Jun) on Fridays and everyday (M-F) in May.

It's taken a ton of volunteer effort, but we've slowly proven to the community that this is transformational, even in the winter.

A lot of the kids that go to our school walk or bike, but enough are driven in cars that it turns the streets into dangerous gauntlets that have to be navigated carefully. There are often close calls between kids and vehicles.

"NEAR NORMAL" for the West Coast. 🙏

It's going to be another hot, draught-filled summer with too many forest fires and smokey skies. But maybe we'll avoid the worst of it along the BC coast.

Nature's Path waffles are back in stock at the grocery store. Woohoo!
It's been over 6 months since they were pulled due to a recall. I'm happy to see them making them again.

What is the proper response to neighbours who park their cars hanging into the alley because their garages have been illegally renovated?
Should I celebrate their ingenuity or curse more common space being used for private vehicle parking?

Statistics over my first 900 #Wordle games.

I average about 3.75 guesses per puzzle. Slight increase in 6s in the last 100 puzzles but no misses (other than forgetting to do it).

Beautiful day for a run, but that was hard.
Final time 3:33:59. Too bad I wasn't 26 seconds faster. I blame the stop to loosen a shoelace that was causing a numb foot.
Huge thanks to all the volunteers and spectators. Cornwall in Kits was something else. So much energy.

Lab grown meat looks gross. But plant-based calamari - sure, why not. That sounds more appetizing than eating squid.

Back after 1.5 hours. Apparently 30,000 households in Vancouver lost power because of "wire dug up". Someone made a big oopsie.

Big East Van power outage.

I think I'll take a nap while the good people at BC Hydro repair the substation fault.

Congratulations to @seanorr.bsky.social and @lucymaloney.bsky.social. Huge victories in the Vancouver by-election.

Orr did better than Swanson in the last general. Maloney would have been a top vote getter too.

This is more than just a motivated opposition. There's a shift away from ABC. #vanpoli
