Since 2011, working-age women have fared worse than men on many diseases.

Poor health also contributes to economic inactivity and addressing this is a government priority. But greater focus is needed on women who spend more of their working years living in ill health.

Phase 2 (long-term recommendations) of the commission is only mentioned briefly. This gives Baroness Casey more freedom to set the direction it will take as evidence is gathered by the team. Given the urgent need for reform, we hope to see firm plans, not just options for consideration, by 2028.

The commission will sit under the Cabinet Office, which should support its independence – acknowledging also the role of govt departments beyond DHSC: the Treasury, MHCLG & DWP. Strong & decisive leadership will be key to develop a coherent implementation plan recognising these interdependencies.

It’s good to see the TORs include the interactions between the Fair Pay Agreement & Employment Rights Bill. We also note the mention of the interface between health &social care – watch out for our work on CHC highlighting the existing and oft ignored challenges that urgently need to be addressed

But there are risks that the narrow ‘focus to support the health mission’ - esp on elective care waiting lists & delayed discharges - means social care once more being lost to NHS priorities. It will be difficult to see results when social care is only one part of the puzzle: shorturl.at/oQSdR
