Data security is an excuse. When TikTok comes back and Trump is crowing about "saving" it, pay attention to how the algorithm and audience changes. Because they don't care who has your data; they care that there's a platform out there not conforming to the right-leaning standards of US owned apps.

And bending the knee will almost certainly involve changes to the standards and algorithm to make it much less hostile to the status quo.

When teen users attempted to search LGBTQ terms they were shown a blank page. Posts with LGBTQ+ hashtags including #lesbian, #bisexual, #gay, #trans, #queer, #nonbinary, #pansexial, #transwomen, #Tgirlsarebeautiful, #bisexualpride, #lesbianpride, and dozens of others were blocked.

A couple years ago, I sat at the counter of a greasy spoon in Oklahoma and listened to a farmer in overalls and a battered MAGA hat tell me how wind turbine leases made it possible for him to keep his family farm rather than selling out to agribusiness. Wonder how he's feeling about his party now?

The wildfire in Pacific Palisades has me thinking back on one of my very favorite hikes and how quickly the terrain shifted from neighborhood to wilderness.
