I was having trouble understanding why in the world Dems would cave now of all times, but then these two random internet commenters explained it to me. You might not have voted for the shutdown deal, but judging by who did it's got the fingerprints of your spinless "leadership" all over it.

This has got to be a top ten Chotiner moment. Top five, maybe.

How to tell the world you are just absolutely pickled by self-reinforcing rightwing talking points without directly just saying "I am just absolutely pickled by self-reinforcing rightwing talking points:"

This isn't even hyperbole.

Current headline is worse. It takes him at his word that he "wants to" fix science, when there is no real evidence this is true. Like most Trump appointees, he's an arsonist who's been hired to run the fire department.
They all operate exclusively in bad faith and shouldn't be taken at their word.

Largely agree with the piece, and the passage addresses it, but it's not just "about" Trump/GOP. It's also about a small extremely powerful group of ppl who prioritize not just profits but ability to continue indefinite consolidation of power & money into as few hands as possible.

I read ready to hate it, but aside from the Kirk revisionism -- which was on the lighter side compared to the near-deification I've seen elsewhere -- I think most of the action items are actually fine and good. Especially the first one.
Honestly? B-/C+ (not bad for a non-Bouie NYT Opinion piece.)

I keep thinking about this @notalawyer.bsky.social post. Watching the overblown response to a hateful bad-faith propagandist getting murdered, when god knows how many other innocent people also get murdered every single day, is making me even more cynical about our stupid vapid hyperreal society.
September 13, 2025 at 1:25 PM
The below is true, but I still worry the response will be simply hiring the same consultants who have sucked for decades to help them come up with the wrong 5 words.

This was published over ten years ago. Many people read and discussed it.

It's a good article but *still* does the thing where it gives an undeservedly charitable read on the rightwing justices' motives and
honor. Allevidence suggests what they are actually just the shameless instrumentalist hacks they seem to be, acting almost exclusively in bad faith.

Do rich people ever actually move when the thing that they claim will lead to them moving happens, or is it as hollow a threat as it seems?
I'm not rich & don't live in NYC but is some rich asshole who owns a $10m condo or whatever really going to move to fucking Florida if their taxes go up a bit?
June 25, 2025 at 8:36 PM
Hey, everyone. I know nobody can keep track of everything every congressperson does, but Clyburn sucking and being dumb in public are not new things. He's nothing special, and he's taking up room in leadership that someone born after Woodstock could put to better use.
June 21, 2025 at 3:30 AM
He's been below replacement level for years. More than that, he's keeping someone younger with fresh ideas who didn't develop her political instincts in the 90s from joining leadership.
June 21, 2025 at 3:26 AM
Interesting article, but why "over concerns that" and not "because." In my local district at least, there is at least as much evidence that kids use phones to orchestrate fights (and stir things up more generally) as there is that the sun will rise in the east tomorrow.
May 16, 2025 at 10:43 AM
My guess is they'd be doing all this regardlessof what else was going on, as a key part of the rightwing movement (from GOP pols through their infotainment universe) is relentlessly keeping the outrage dialed up to 11.
April 25, 2025 at 11:15 AM
Thing is, incumbents have *massive* inbuilt advantage. An incumbent who loses a primary is doing wrong things, saying wrong things, or too aloof to fight to keep the seat.
Or their challenger is simply so strong they're able to overcome the incumbency advantage. And we need strong people in office.
April 17, 2025 at 11:28 AM
The whole "conservative" project is built on lying. This has been the rightwing MO for decades. Remember Tucker claiming he was an "entertainer" or whatever?
March 22, 2025 at 11:08 AM
I didn't think I'd ever post an Axios screenshot, but these are strange times.
March 14, 2025 at 4:03 AM
The "I can't vote for either Clinton or Trump because she didn't practice email server best practices while he's spent his entire life committing crimes and lying about it" guy?
If Chris Cillizza is invited to your conference about accountability, you're doing something very very wrong.

The key bits are at the end, where he says what so few Democrats are willing to say in public, that the entire Republican party at this point is so reliably full of shit they should be treated with the presumption that they're operating in bad faith.
February 23, 2025 at 11:45 AM
This is a good article, and mainstream outlets could learn a lot from how clear and unambiguous it.
But this bit is simply wrong. There were people predicting that something like what we're experiencing were coming. AFAICT they were largely ridiculed as being overly alarmist.
February 23, 2025 at 11:18 AM
Great piece, but there's a feedback loop between ppl making/ reporting news & ppl people receiving it. & while there's plenty of blame to direct at journalists and politicians, audience also deserves a lot. Many ppl are simply dumb &/or lazy, reject complexity & nuance.
No idea what the solution is.
February 20, 2025 at 10:57 AM
Some good stuff in here, but it still makes the mistake in first paragraph of repeating the BS narrative that DOGE is about "cost-cutting" or "fraud-finding" rather than the Trojan horse for destabilization and privatization that the evidence cited in the following paragraphs suggests it is.

Feel like he should be on this list of All-American names.
