I read it in a grad school class that was looking at different explanations for "the rise of the west" - why Europe was able to dominate the globe. From what I remember our consensus was that the book was interesting, but all its explanations would apply to Asian countries as well.

Yeah, I think they wanted a cover that they could say follows their politics but that Mamdani voters would buy.

Yeah, I think there's a prevalent idea amongst the right that the US's lack of success in COIN can be solved by making war against the civilian population. There's probably some faux-historical (viking probably) justification.

A society that provided "money and a room of one's own" to everyone would probably be filled with a lot of art! Humans desperately want to make art! I know if I had the material security I would have made an attempt at an art career. Even if I didn't succeed, I'd be a better artist than I am today.

I think this episode or one like it needed to happen. The Gorn as previously depicted on SNW didn't seem like a species that could even have a society. The premise is also a classic SF story. I think the Metron were completely unneeded though and made both this episode and Arena stupider.

Why is it the St George flag?! With Union Jacks you could at least position yourself as the "real" inclusive patriots, but isn't the English flag a far-right dog whistle unless it's a World Cup?

I think private school vouchers were/are being fought over in Virginia, so the play is probably to get taxpayers to foot the 65k.

I wish they mentioned the alien groups' actual conflict past the text at the top of the episode. I forgot which planet started the war and who had suffered the high casualties, both kinda important for the moral stakes. Also, the documentary camera angles were awful.

There's a definite cutoff point between those who are in on the con and those who aren't. A bunch of mid-level conservative radio hosts died from COVID, but anyone higher than that got vaxxed and was fine.

To my knowledge, you still haven't addressed the fact that Grok went Nazi this summer and all of the big consumer-facing LLMs you're pushing are owned by right wing tech oligarchs and subject to to similar manipulation.

I think a huge component of the artistic explosions of that era is cheap housing in cities. After white flight you could move to NYC and live on a pittance, allowing you to focus on your art while connecting with other artists/musicians/etc.

Those lines! The use of shadow in the first two panels! Absolutely beautiful. Also, I had totally forgotten about ginger Luther. I think the only comic I had with him in it was the death of Superman.

I enjoyed the article, but nodded knowingly when the write said he was 5'8" and 150 lbs. I'm an inch shorter and 40 heavier, so I think slim fits are in my past.

Cool! I've started sketching in color and it does help me both keep it loose and also keeps the inks distinct while I work. I might try tinting the background too. Do you set the BG to white before coloring or color up from the blue?
