【The Current State of D&D in China】
Today, 5e and 3.5e are the two rule sets most commonly played in China, with 5e having now surpassed 3.5e.
Pathfinder—often jokingly called “3.75e”—is also very popular and is sometimes seen as China’s third most-played TRPG.

The Chinese original commercial TRPG Journey Through the Martial World (侠界之旅), crowdfunded last year, was also deeply influenced by D&D.

D&D influenced the earliest original commercial TRPG in China. The novel Chronicles of Nine States I (九州志 I), published in 2007, included the Nine States D20 (九州 D20) system, created based on the 3.5e OGL.

Later on, Baldur’s Gate 3 exploded in popularity, bringing D&D into the mainstream. For context, the most-watched CoC video on Bilibili has about 3.5 million views, while the top Baldur’s Gate 3 video has over 17 million.

Today, since Wizards of the Coast has largely pulled out of the Chinese market, neither the 5e 2014 version nor the 5e 2024 version has an official Chinese release. That said, because D&D remains so popular, English editions of the books are easy to find on Taobao.

Also in 2008, Wizards of the Coast launched D&D 4e. The next year, Perfect World (完美世界)’s "Zongheng Chinese Network" (纵横中文网) acted as the agent to distribute the simplified Chinese version of DND 4e.

In 2002, the company “Third Wave” (第三波) —also responsible for the Chinese editions of Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 and the Dragonlance Chronicles—released the official simplified Chinese edition of D&D 3e, translated by the fan group “Fantasy Monks Association.” (奇幻修士会)

Around the year 2000, thanks to the influence of Magic: The Gathering, CRPGs like Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, and novels such as the Dragonlance Chronicles, many players got their first taste of D&D.

Joypie is a Chinese TRPG company. Besides Sword World and Oukahoushin, its core distributed product is Evil Hat Productions' Fate Core System, for which it has developed many original Chinese settings and adventures.

Oukahoushin RPG is a Chinese-style TRPG influenced by the classical Chinese novel Investiture of the Gods (封神演义). It is reported that the artwork for the Chinese Oukahoushin will receive a modern redesign.

【Future of Sword World in China】
Joypie has established a deep partnership with Group SNE. Plans include releasing the Sword World 2.5 rulebook and the Chinese version of Oukahoushin (央華封神) RPG.
