Here’s an excellent one that snuck under my new release radar Friday. This morning I googled them after listening to a recording of their set from Cologne Jazzweek. The players will be familiar names to those who follow the Nordic jazz scene.

#JazzMusic I thought I was very familiar with the discography of both John Abercrombie and Lars Danielsson but I had no idea about this 1997 trio release they did together.

#GratefulDead Check out the song Daze Off (track 2). At 45 seconds in I thought we were heading into The Other One.

Danish guitarist Kristian Borring moved to Australia with his wife & kids, and formed the trio Number Junky. Their debut release 'Earth Matters' features lots of unusual time signatures and interlocking patterns without ever feeling contrived.

Good album by ex-Weather Report bassist Miroslav Vitous, recorded in 1982. John Surman on sax and bass clarinet, John Taylor on piano, Jon Christensen on drums.

The secret sauce here is Christensen’s drumming, and the impeccable recording by Jan Erik Kongshaug at Talent Studio in Oslo.

My favorite of Monika’s three albums, a nice mix of avant-garde big band jazz and rock influenced guitar. Good way to start an early Saturday morning (not yet 5:30 out here on the west coast). #jazzsky
