I suspect that Starmer regards rhetoric as a distraction from the serious business of govt.

That's partly a reaction against politicians like Johnson, for whom politics was *only* about speech & presentation.

But it leaves his govt rudderless,& allows others to shape the "common-sense" of politics

But that is not enough. No.10 should never have been in a position to install Gibb in the first place. It shouldn't control the board membership, the DG appointment, or the purse strings. What's required is genuine independence for the BBC.
