Maybe surprising, but I'm actually ok w/ this. By same logic that "humans are apes" (ape = hominoid), humans are also monkeys & fish. But that drops a lot of useful language. E.g., "ape-like prognathism" is meaningless when describing early hominins. So I use "ape" to mean hominoids minus humans.
