9th Feb 1940. Damaged by the 602 Squadron Spitfire of Sqn/Ldr Douglas Farquhar, a Heinkel 111 of KG26 made an (almost) perfect landing near North Berwick in Scotland. The radio operator was killed, but 3 other crewmen were unhurt. The aircraft was later repaired and extensively flown by the RAF

An RN rating carries a young girl along a cluttered dock in Greenock, Scotland, March 1, 1945. This famous image, and the story behind it, epitomise naval purpose: protect the high seas; safeguard civilians.
This is the story of the Sørøya Island rescue.

this electrical transmission tower has a little problem. can you spot it? actually, it's not a small problem--it cost us 16.65 *billion* dollars and caused the deaths of 85 people.

Today, the war in Ukraine – or at least the time since the large-scale Russian invasion of 2022 – reaches the 1000-day mark. Besides reflecting on the tremendous sacrifices of the Ukrainian people since February 2022, the 1000-day point permits taking stock of the situation. 1/8 🇺🇦🧵

I've been studying the wreck of HMS Brazen, lost in 1800 in a gale on the Sussex coast. It has a memorial in Newhaven's churchyard, but not much as been researched beyond the original story. I'm focusing on affected communities, and will be giving a talk on it in February. #SussexCoast #SenseOfPlace

Glasgow in the 17th century reconstructed, from a scan of James Bell and James Paton, *Glasgow: Its Municipal Organization and Administration* (Glasgow, 1896). 'Egliscemeis' croft is interesting.

Generation after generation, Doggerland was nibbled away by the rising North Sea.
Did Mesolithic people have stories about times when life was easier? Who knows.
But there certainly wasn't any ignoring what happened next.

A deeply weird thing I learned recently:
There is a place, a tiny hamlet at a road intersection north of Roscoe, N.Y., that simultaneously & without any contradiction, does and doesn't exist.

Dismantling the myth that ancient slavery ‘wasn’t that bad’
There was no one type of slavery in ‘biblical’ or ‘ancient’ societies, given how varied they were. But much of what historians know about slavery during those eras is horrific.
