Once again I am in @thefence.bsky.social this time leading the pack with a dating anecdote!
The question was "The Fence is, famously, for lovers, so we asked our readers about the trials and tribulations they've faced on the dating trail" and I answered "I once arrived at a pub for a date by bus and train as a football match was starting, and returned home after the date by train and bus in time to watch the end of the match at home alone." And my story is first on the page! First thing you'll read in The Fence if you read it front to back!

In the Hammersmith Oxfam there is a shelf - nearly a whole shelf! - of VHS tapes for sale!!!! The Romance of Torvill & Dean, North by Northwest, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, Midnight Express, The Sound of Music, a season of The Royle Family, Carmen, Samson and Delilah, Brother Sun Sister Moon, two more seasons of The Royle Family, something called Ballistic '96 and Century of Rugby. I typed all this out on the alt text because I could not believe my eyes and now you can disbelieve this via alt text, too

Seeing some hot takes about what Jacob Elordi does in Frankenstein and everyone needs to stop being weird about his handsomeness and focus on the extraordinary acting he does as something repelled by its own existence
Mr Elordi makes us feel the anguish under all of the Creature's choices. His disgust at his own existence and his fury at what Victor had done have propelled him to the end of the earth even as this is not truly his nature. But it is excruciatingly hard to be a monster, and there is only so much pain anyone can endure on this life. Teenage girls, gays and theys who see him say "we could be monsters together" will swoon and never stop.

A great decision
From Terence Stamp's memoir: Our Mum was relating a story about her married sister, who had embarked on an affair. The gentleman in question was of a certain age and had trouble with a complete performance, so he has apparently initially satisfied our aunt orally. Of course we siblings were relishing this hot gossip, but our Dad was curdling with embarrassment. Yet Mum, making the most of the moment, elaborated on the story: recently the lover had been roused to a complete erection and came for the first time in years. This revelation was followed by a reverential quiet, into which our Dad commented, 'Blimey. It must have come out in lumps.' The timing of this one-liner was so memorable that forever after the boyfriend was known only as Lumpy.
