Our friends at @senecalakeguardian.bsky.social don't post much here, so we are sharing this on their behalf - on Friday, at Governor Hochul's direction, NYS DEC approved a Title V air permit for bitcoin mining at the Greenidge Generation gas power plant.

In a stunning reversal, she has retracted the decision to deny Greenidge’s Title V Air Permit on the grounds that it violates the Climate Law, and has instead issued this dirty polluting fracked gas power plant a five year permit to keep operating- right in the middle of a court case that was set to resume in two weeks. On the same day, she approved the NESE pipeline- a project that has been denied multiple times because of its environmental risks, signaling her commitment to obliterate any semblance of responsibility to the climate. This is a disgusting betrayal of New Yorkers and a slap in the face to everyone who fought for our climate law, and for the Finger Lakes region. Governor Hochul is siding with a fossil-fueled Bitcoin mine over our air, water, and climate future — handing Greenidge a license to pollute after the state rightly denied its permit. This deal drags us backward and makes a mockery of the Climate Act that New Yorkers voted for. It’s a disgraceful failure of leadership , a betrayal of our community and a gift to corporate polluters at the expense of our region and our planet. We are simply speechless, but we promise you that this will not go unanswered. We will be meeting with our legal team on Monday and will have more information to share once we digest this situation. NYISO's annual Gold Book has a table on page 134 of current Load Interconnection Requests, which adds up to almost 8 GW annually of industrial power requests from NY's grid.
Almost all are from data center developers, and most are intended for cryptomining in upstate!

Our ongoing work with the Tonawanda Community Working Group led to extremely strong standards for the clean up of contamination at Tonawanda Coke in the final Decision Document. We also called attention to the site developer’s plan to use Tonawanda Coke to mine for cryptocurrency, and spoke at the NYPA hearing earlier this month to advocate instead for building renewable energy projects on this and other industrial brownfield sites in the River Road corridor. Text reads - 2024 with the Tonawanda Teams We helped uncover a disturbing pattern in DEC Region 9 of extending expired Title V Air Permits for years, with almost 90% of Title V facilities in Erie and Niagara County running on expired permits, several by a decade or more. We brought out dozens of Town of Tonawanda residents to the public hearing on zoning to flag deficiencies and call for stronger environmental justice protections. The action featured drag artist Freddie Hercury to highlight how the “Adult Cabaret” definition in the revised zoning ordinance carried forward discriminatory language that defacto bans drag performances, an oversight town officials that evening verbally conceded needs to be revisited as soon as possible. Text reads - 2024 with the Tonawanda Teams These are just a few highlights from 2024 - we also collected hundreds of petition signatures and postcards concerning several issues like NRG’s feet dragging on the clean up of the ash ponds at Huntley, canvassed across the area, supported our neighbors in North Tonawanda in their fight against Foristar, and much more. Not all changes were for the positive - the sudden and unexpected closure of Sumitomo a month ago reminded us of the importance of building local coalitions and trust to be able to work rapidly in response to crisis moments, and that, when we rely upon extractive corporations without local roots, our economy is left vulnerable to the whims of board room executives thousands of miles away. As we enter an uncertain future in 2025, Clean Air invites everyone to reflect on the struggles we have already overcome and the wins that we have achieved that once seemed impossible. Fifteen years ago, holding Tonawanda Coke accountable for its blatant disregard for air quality standards and resident health seemed to be an insurmountable task.
