I think the “don’t tell” part is probably the safest bet.
I went through a similar transition, but no one lost it. But there was a “why didn’t you tell us” vibe.

Learned this lesson the hard way.
At 17 CA to NY graduation trip. Friend fell asleep at the wheel. We rolled 3x in a field, escaping with minor injuries but a 2-day hospital stay.
Cop came to visit. No charges. He picked up clothes all over the field. “Who had the skid marks on their underwear?”
