Tonight’s sky - the Emu over Karijini National Park, Western Australia

At this time of year the Emu’s head is beside the Southern Cross and its body follows the ridge of the Milky Way

The view of the mangrove tidal flats of Roebuck Bay at high tide as you fly into Broome.
They remind me of looking at a slide of cells under a microscope
The brown mud flats at the edge of Roebuck Bay have waterways that resemble veins and capillaries as the full tide starts to recede, dragging the pale green water back into the bright blue bay. You can see eddy currents of pale brown silt swirling at the interface of the mangroves and the bay The high tide from an aerial view of Roebuck Bay, Broome. It’s Shinju Matsuri Festival time in Broome. Celebrating the diversity of cultures that tell the stories of this place

The aluminium silhouettes each represent the various groups of victims of the raid and the aftermath. Over 100 lives were lost in and around the airport and port of Broome that day. It’s Japanese residents, who were a big part of the pearling industry in Broome, were rounded up and interred in camps in Northam and SA after this event and war with Japan became a reality on home soil.

The colour and magnitude of scale of the Kimberley landscape is so impossible to describe or demonstrate in its totality. It is vast and harsh and brutal in its splendour

Nice day for a hike at Matthew Gorge on Mt Hart Station, along the western end of the Gibb River Road in the Kimberley region of Western Australia
One of the many freshwater pools along the Matthew Gorge. A lone white ghost gum is reflected on the surface of the rock pool. Pale green spinifex bushes and low shrubs line the walls of the rocky gorge under clear blue skies Native water Lillie’s sit on the surface of a rock pool. Pale green shrubs line the rocky gorge A crystal clear rock pool provides the perfect place to cool off from the hot 30+C heat of the Kimberley. Ghost gums in the distance, large granite rocks line the waterway View from the middle of the gorge, water running through a large bed of granite boulders with ghost gums and an orange/ochre and black cliff wall defining the gorge. Sparse trees work hard to take root in this harsh environment.

Just back from a 3 hour sunrise chopper flight over the Leopold Ranges

Unbelievably stunning. Bright orange rock faces, incredible waterfalls and crystal clear pools of water

Majestic Mt Augustus, or Burringurrah as it is known to the Yamato people, is the world’s largest monocline rock, twice the size of Uluru/Ayres Rock. There is access from the 45km loop road around it and hike in to see ancient rock engravings and petroglyphs as well as magnificent views

If you’re ever in need of a film set for a period drama set in a country town, look no further than Cue in Western Australia. Once a thriving gold mining town in the late 1800’s, it is now a deserted time capsule, shops and pubs closed recently as FIFO means nobody lives there anymore.
The shopfront of an abandoned hairdressers shop, with a mural in the window depicting a rural scene. The windows have gold lettering and lead piping. In very good condition for an old building The post office/police station/visitor centre is housed in a sandstone building with a clock tower facing the street. The only building open on that side of the street The shire offices are housed in a majestic sandstone two story building with a tin roof The ornate hexagonal rotunda with iron filigree at its base and a tin roof in the middle of the road of this once thriving town. Cue had a very wide Main Street to allow cattle, sheep and horse drawn carriages to traverse it

Spectacular scenery in the Kennedy Ranges. The sunrises are otherworldly. But in the middle of the day, this is harsh, brutal and unforgiving country, with scrubby vegetation and rocky and barren soil

We stopped at the Murchison Settlement and they had a rustic museum full of photos and memorabilia from 100 years ago and I found myself surrounded by photos of the stations and homesteads my dad grew up on and his many family members who worked this harsh and brutal land as pastoralists
A montage of pictures from the early 1900’s of station life in the Murchison Yuin station. One of my father’s brothers was born under a peppermint tree on this property in 1924. He had Yuin as his middle name My grandmother and her sister Winnie were 13th & 14th (and youngest) of their siblings and got married in a double wedding in 1920 The Coolgardie Safe that was put to good use keeping the mutton fresh on Yuin station
