Tatsuya Nakadai was brilliant in so many films. ‘Intense’ hardly covers it. The Human Condition, Harakiri, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, so many, so many.

I wrote an essay about my favorite performance of his, The Sword of Doom, and its final frame— his face forever trapped in rage.

No.
RIP Tatsuya Nakadai. One of my all-time favorite actors.
Harakiri 1962 Masaki Kobayashi w Tatsuya Nakadai in signature role. In my top 10 all time; MK & TN also did amazing 10 hour Human Condition trilogy.

a government as capricious as ours is no government at all but a medieval spiked morning star wielded by capitalism

Camus says “what distinguishes modern sensibility from classical sensibility is that the latter thrives on moral problems and the former on metaphysical problems”— is this true? and if so, given this model, what would post-modern sensibilities thrive on?

“…the hook into pop culture, and the hook into the moment we live in, is ultimately the thing that allows the corpse of philosophy to drag itself along”

only recently started listening to Game Studies Study Buddies, so not sure which host is which yet, can’t identify the speaker, but dang, son

not really a TWILIGHT ZONE guy but that slot machine croaking “Franklin” and terrorizing Everett Sloane is pretty good

seems much of modern media don’t actually tell stories? but simply a sequence of events— before writing my Interactive Fiction I want to structurally understand more about Narratology— also this site, extra- intra- and meta- diegetic theory

extradiegetic narrative
An extradiegetic narrator is one who narrates a story from outside the fictional universe of a particular text.  This narrator communicates the primary narrative to an audience equally removed...

in Los Angeles food pantry line today, roughly two hours, I estimate the line was three/four times as long as usual b/c of SNAP shutdown, def significantly less food available once inside (not complaining about what I did receive), a lot more toddlers in line, props to the volunteers for good cheer

those of you who also record and edit your own voice, as well as the voices of others, it is normal to hear a lot more aberrations in your own voice, right? #AudioDrama #AudioFiction

as a kid one of my favorite games was ATLANTIS, something about the hum of the ships, I think— ominous but soothing— well I just found a 30-minute PBS program from back in the day all about its making at Imagic, pretty cool #Atari

:)
OpenAI pirated large numbers of books and used them to train models.

OpenAI then deleted the dataset with the pirated books, and employees sent each other messages about doing so.

A lawsuit could now force the company to pay $150,000 per book, adding up to billions in damages.

a testament for yesterday— we are not capitulating in advance to the authoritarian project of disenfranchisement, but instead taking deep breaths and working those lungs of democracy— a friend of mine became a US citizen within days of this election and voted for the very first time

only learned about Eugene Debs a year ago, so was surprised last night to hear Mamdani open with a quote from him, I simply don’t know where he sits in the zeitgeist, but the audience seemed receptive?
November 5, 2025 at 4:53 PM
yes
Mamdani got a humanities degree.

His win helps to illustrate that one of the central forces driving higher ed’s dissolution of the humanities is the fear that teaching people how power works can also lead to their interest in seizing it on behalf of the less powerful.
