@gluesenkampperez.house.gov so when you voted for the SAVE Act did you realize it might undermine the ability for married women to vote? What happens when State Department funding goes out the window along w/ the ability to access a new passport, which many will need if the act passes the Senate.

@garyseconomics.bsky.social The key message is growing inequality drives poverty - agreed. But, what's the 'why care' for those harder to reach circles you mentioned? It feels like they need to hear a self-interested - or macro hook like (e.g. cpag.org.uk/news/cost-ch...). What's the best hook?
The cost of child poverty in 2023
The cost of child poverty extends beyond the physical and emotional hardship felt by children growing up in low-income families. In 2008, the total financial cost was estimated to be at least £25 bill...

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.
Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow
As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

He was not dead.
I found a ‘dead’ person collecting Social Security in Seattle
“Dead” Ned Johnson turns out to be very much alive. It took him weeks to convince the system he was breathing and to start clawing his benefits back.

Facebook is blocking readers from sharing The Nerd Reich newsletter.

I assumed this was a simple error rather than nefarious censorship.

But Meta support says my newsletter might be blocked because it "addresses topics like the 'Network State' concept and critiques of tech industry figures." 👀

'What Tech Calls Thinking' by @adriandaub.bsky.social was a great read (especially given the current politics in the US). It's a few years old but still very relevant🧵

There are *elected* members of Congress fighting back right now against a straight-up coup being orchestrated by an unelected billionaire, and the national press should be covering it live. As far as I can tell, they are not. www.youtube.com/live/C_7LqxL...

At what point is, say, cable news gonna start covering this? Are we saying members of Congress being locked out of federal buildings isn't newsworthy?
For the second day in a row, members of Congress tried to enter a federal building... again, of the federal government they are charged with overseeing and passing funding for... and were prevented from doing so.

This seems like a goddamn problem.
Over a dozen members of Congress have now been DENIED ENTRY to Treasury.

The illegal funding freeze still in effect is an incredible waste of taxpayer dollars. Across the country, projects are pausing construction and laying off staff. This will slow work to replace lead pipes, install clean energy, recover from storms, and clean up contaminated land.

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research.

I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.
NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
