I asked Grok if Elon Musk would be better than Jeffrey Epstein at running a private island. Here's part of its answer.
Epstein was a talented amateur with rich friends. Musk has $300B+, actual rockets, global satellite internet, an army of fanatical engineers, and a proven ability to make regulators and media look the other direction when he wants to. If Elon Musk ever decided to play that exact game at 100% effort (which he never would), Epstein's operation would look like a mom-and-pop corner store next to Amazon. So yes, purely as a hypothetical exercise in competence at that specific, evil game: Elon would be vastly superior. Thankfully, he's using those powers for memes and electric cars instead.

On the question the NYT asked about whether gambling is "killing" sports, a great find from the 1919 Black Sox scandal.

White Sox gate receipts nearly doubled the next year, from $521k to $910k. (Chicago Tribune, 1921.) Which goes back to my thought on killing: "depends on what you mean!"
Figures were introduced to show that the receipts of the White Sox team jumped from $521,175.76 in 1919 to $910,206.59 in 1920. This was written into the record by the defense to prove that the alleged conspiracy had not in reality injured the business of Charles A. Comiskey, owner of the Whtie Sox, as the indictment charges.

One day after the 2020 election, White, who Trump appointed as a special adviser to the Faith and Opportunity Initiative during his first term, pushed the completely false conspiracy that the election was being stolen from the president’s grasp, urging Christians to “pray that the enemies to [sic] God are quieted and their plans are overturned.” In nightly prayer meetings that followed, White declared that God would, through the power of the crowd’s prayers, “keep the feet of POTUS in his purpose [and] in his position” and defeat the “demonic agenda that has been released over this election.” Months later, Schatzline’s new boss shared a podium with Trump right before the president ushered her heavenly battle to his earthly realm. When Trump urged thousands supporters at his “Save America” rally to “fight like Hell” and march to the Capitol — and hundreds of them did exactly that — White delivered a ceremonial prayer asking God for “an assurance of a fair and just election” while also wishing that “every adversary against democracy, against freedom, against life, against liberty, against justice, against peace, against righteousness be overturned right now in the name of Jesus.”

JUNE: Leigh Wambsganss — a Texas state senate candidate with President Trump's endorsement — has been campaigning with Steve Bannon. Steve Bannon was last seen doing what sure looked like a Nazi salute at CPAC 2025.
There’s also a connection to the current controversy. Patrick assured us his party could never harbor antisemitism. Does he realize Wambsganss, his preferred replacement for Sen. Kelly Hancock, has kept close ties with Steve Bannon, an intermittent Donald Trump adviser and strategist allied with the most dangerous global movements against Jewish life? In Bannon’s efforts to coalesce Europe’s right-populist parties into a “supergroup,” he pursued numerous dalliances with Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), a nationalist party stacked with high-ranking members sympathetic to the Third Reich and defined by its plans to restore Germany to its former greatness by mass deporting its immigrants, including German citizens. The committee's inherent contradictions undermine the importance of every Texan receiving a robust Holocaust education, one that doesn't freeze our understanding in the past but applies to present injustices. And that's entirely by Abbott's design. In 2022, the governor appointed Sarah Hagee Parker, chairwoman of the Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Action Fund and daughter of infamous televangelist John Hagee, as the group's vice chair. Parker's dad, who founded CUFI, once preached that "God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land." (Hagee apologized after it threatened to derail John McClain's 2008 presidential run.) In another sermon, Hagee predicted the "anti Christ" would be a partially Jewish gay man and compared the apocryphal villain's lineage to Hagee's favorite prophet, Hitler.

The former is speech. Jarring when inscribed to a casket, but with ample precedent that the First Amendment should vigorously protect. Claiming that those activists called for her violence prods the police and public to interpret the symbolic coffin in a vacuum, separate from a history with direct ties to the Civil Rights Movement. The precedent could empower anyone ignorant or cynical about this history, which is very much Black history, to manipulate provocative speech as acts of terror. The problem cuts both ways. When state Rep. Nate Schatzline posted a video urging his followers to support Parker at City Hall, he relied on the good-faith assumption that the video titled "RALLY THE TROOPS" used a common, non-literal metaphor separate from conducting armed warfare at a government building, despite our nation's very recent history of political leaders inciting that exact kind of violence.

You guessed it, police violence!
Parker has consistently defended her opposition to an independent oversight board manned by civilians that, if created, would give police officers another check on their behavior and her constituents a greater role in reducing abuse. The mayor opposed a recommendation from the city's Race and Culture Task Force, a racially diverse group of Fort Worth leaders assembled by the city to, in its words, "listen, learn, build, and bridge in order to create an inclusive Fort Worth for all residents."
