Final Fantasy XIII has this exact problem. It spends hours telling players about the paradigm mechanics but the player's engagement amounts to "do the thing the game says to do." Then the player meets Barthandelus and needs to demonstrate full mastery of all the systems to win that boss battle.

Doom. All four episodes on Ultra-Violence. Definitely wouldn't be getting many secrets but I'm sure I could do it. I'd have to make a few safety saves though, especially one before the E4M6 Cyberdemon.

I actually played through it entirely with a controller! Might be the only game where I actually used the DS4's touchpad (mapped that to mouse movement and the two sides of the pad to left and right click).
