Seems to me that would go forward. I know they’re not the same groups of people, but similar pipelines involved. Curious about the attitudes present on “humanities.” To be fair, I see that attitude occasionally in finance/accounting, but nowhere near what I saw with engineers.

Do the educational pipelines contribute to this? I used to work in an engineering department and without painting with too broad of a brush, I came away from that with the opinion that engineering disciplines started toxic because of systematic deprioritization of non-engineering subject matter.

That’s a good point. In the more general tech industry, does the axe tend to fall first on those in the “support” or “overhead” roles? I see this in my own area of expertise, but that’s in the public sphere which runs very differently. I’d made an assumption about workforce composition that’s wrong.

I work outside of that industry and have no experience with it, but have internalized — one way or another — that software developers tend toward resistance to organizing attempts. I don’t know it to be true, it’s just the impression I’ve developed. Is that incorrect?

Well, that’s bollocks on both fronts. Especially since the furor probably arose from folks who espouse the principle of relentless critique.

Legalism, I think, is an understated driver of what we are seeing today. In general the overarching system produces bad outcomes. Internal to the the system the professionals are inured to it and inoculate themselves against alternatives. It’s not just the right that complain about judicial activism

Not for nothing, there are billions of dollars being devoted to telling people they want it. Propaganda and marketing works on everyone to some degree. I can’t read an explicit acknowledgement of that in this case as demeaning and solipsistic.

I promise this picture only looks worse from the inside of civil service

Optimistic to think most people fully buy in on the presumption of innocence in the first place. Copaganda and true crime saturation has done a number on society

I suppose that I do, too. I’ve just also not seen any evidence from them that they were doing anything different. That said, using the appropriate razor here the unflattering choice of calling friends and family stupid vice malicious is probably more accurate.

Was anyone ever under the impression that was anything but performative? I’m a big appropriations guy so I’ve never seen actual evidence of concern for deficits unless it allows them to shoot the hostage they don’t like.

I don’t know the answer to that but I suspect people feel like the legal definition of homicide is not sufficient to manage what the assassin did or what a CEO does which leads to extrajudicial behavior.

I get lawhumpers hate this kind of situation, but they’re part of what got us here.
December 7, 2024 at 9:30 PM
I think this is a very important thing to highlight.

I also think the only “performative” part of any of this is when people feel they have to state “murder is bad” just to signal they aren’t bloodthirsty maniacs.

Bigger question: is the law equipped to deal with a CEO whose decisions kill?
