So while I think we should call out this kind of rhetoric, I also think we should be mindful that people who say this stuff aren't always just people who don't want to lose their great view (or whatever) or who feel like they deserve some sort of deference because the "got here first."

For one thing, many people who were born in Seattle have been gentrified out of their communities and are understandably resentful. I also think there is a sense of (often financially privileged) “newcomers” advocating for change w/ little context or understanding of why things are the way they are.

I hear you and agree with this take. I also think it's weird that people who say these things can't see the connection btwn this point of view and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Still, I think there is room for a nuanced understanding of these statements, which is hard to explain well on social media.
