Yesterday NCCOS issued its seasonal assessment for the Lake Erie Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB). The bloom was moderately severe and had an unusually brief peak, which (this is purely speculation) could've been due to the drought conditions near and along the Maumee River late this summer into the fall.

Loop of the 12z ECM tropopause potential temperature. Focus on the North Pole early in the loop. The Pacific pattern amplifies due to TCs and a +East Asian Mountain Torque, dislodging a chunk of the polar vortex south next week. Coldest airmass of the young season likely enroute east of the Rockies.
