When I joined an ambulance service 20 years ago there were 8 women in our recruit class of 32. Last week I taught a new group of first years and had 70% female students. I'm excited about the evolution of Paramedicine given our traditional gender bias. Demographic change brings structural change.

If we want to ensure we have the workforce so Australians have the access to primary care we want, we need to not only train more GPs but normalise primary care as a career for other health professions like paramedics and nurses. PLUS we need specialist post-grad tertiary education for them.

Dr @emmashortis.bsky.social's essay on Project 2025 has been named as part of The @aunz.theconversation.com's summer reading list.

Essential reading over the holiday period. #Project2025
Friday essay: Project 2025, the policy substance behind Trump’s showmanship, reveals a radical plan to reshape the world
Project 2025 is iconoclastic and dystopian. Those who wish to understand Trump and the movement behind him, and the active threat they pose to American democracy, are obliged to take it seriously.

My christmas fun will be writing my first book chapter on sociology. This means binge watching @sweeneysays.com on Crash Course first for inspiration then trying to make sociological theory look that cool in print.

I don't get on campus as much as I would like (I work remotely) but I am excited to be at Bathurst Campus (On Wiradjuri Country) with my CSU Paramedicine colleagues for a few days. There is likely to be some great discussions and planning with just a touch of hijinks.

A concerning statistic especially as the US has an average life expectancy 4.5 years below Australia & 6 years below Hong Kong. (FYI, The US is 55th for life expectancy.) So not only are they living LONGER in poor health, they are living shorter lives & by extension are seriously unwell earlier.
Even as Americans live longer, they spend more of their years in poor health than any other country, a new study shows.

People in the US live with illness for 12.4 years on average – up from 10.9 years in 2000, according to a study published by the American Medical Association

I was asked recently why paramedicine degrees need to be updated & redesigned. The short answer is that paramedicine is changing, fast. Consider: An 18 year old commencing study in 2025 could be still practicing in 2080, at which point paramedicine will be twice as old as a discipline as it is now.

We need to change the language around Paramedicine Work Integrates Learning placements. A placement at an urgent care centre is as legitimate a placement as one on an ambulance. We have Paramedicine placements in various practice settings - not "ambulance" and "non-ambulance".

The same goes for Paramedicine student. Few understand billing, hardship options, etc. Reducing anxiety on financial issues enables access to care.

Viewpoint from @atulgrovermd.bsky.social: Medical students and residents need to be educated on health policy issues like insurance, payment models, and drug regulation to better understand the factors that impact patient health outcomes. #MedEd
